Worshipping Lali

When you are not looking

A bright morning beckons at the end of the tunnel. Yet, I am almost convinced that the next brilliant dawn over the landscapes of human experience will not emerge from our familiar attempts to scramble towards the light. Light is the grand container of the familiar, the holding space for the feasible – and the feasible is no longer enough to carry us through to the changes we desperately desire. We must find a place for the strange, the anomalous, the inscrutable and the shocking. It is thus the darkness within, the shadows, the inexplicable and the previously ‘despicable’ that holds our greatest promise yet. For good reason, hope lies at the end of darkness – but hope will not do. We need something else. I think that ‘something’ we need is surprise. And the best place to look for surprise is when you are not looking.
